A Brief Introduction of the 2nd Affiliated Hospital of
Zhejiang University School of Medicine

Overview
The 2nd Affiliated Hospital of Zhejiang University School of Medicine, located by the picturesque West Lake in Hangzhou, is a modern comprehensive tertiary-care hospital. Its predecessor, C.M.S. (a British church) hospital (also known as Guang Ji Hospital in Chinese) was founded in 1869. After being taken over by the provincial government in 1952, the hospital grew into a new public hospital out of a private church hospital. In 1960, the hospital was renamed the 2nd Affiliated Hospital of Zhejiang Medical University. In September 1998, a new Zhejiang University was established after four individual universities were merged. Thereafter, the hospital became known as the 2nd Affiliated Hospital of Zhejiang University School of Medicine.
After over 130 years’ construction and development, the hospital has established a good reputation in the whole province for its high quality of medical care, excellent performance in medical education and research. It was one of the first hospital in the country that was accredited as a Class A hospital in the tertiary health care system in 1989. In 1991, the hospital received the “Outstanding Unit” Award within the national health organizations. In 1998, the hospital was ranked in the top 100 hospitals in China and as an exemplary hospital in culture and ethics in Zhejiang Province.
With a total capacity of 1750 beds, the hospital has a yearly average of 38,000 inpatients and 1,300,000 outpatients (including ER visits). The hospital now covers a building area of more than 140,000 square meters. Its facilities include buildings of a Cerebral Disease Center, an Eye Center, a 22-story Outpatient and Scientific Teaching Building, an Emergent Care Center with helicopter service, as well as an International Health Promotion Center which are all well equipped with pleasant surroundings.

Hospital Staff
Over the years of its development, the hospital has witnessed the emergence of medical experts and scholars renowned both at home and abroad for their high academic attainments. Among its 1973 staff members, 357 people are holding senior professional medical titles, three are special appointed professors of the Ministry of Education and 20 specialists are getting special government allowance. One of the professors has been appointed as the chief of one branch committee of the National Medical Association. Many others are appointed as members of standing committee of the National Medical Association. One senior professor has been awarded as a honorable fellow of the American College of Surgeons.
Quality Medical Care
Today the hospital has grown into a top-rank hospital in China with complete disciplines. It has 32 clinical sections and 13 ancillary medical services. Most prominent among the clinical specialties are: Emergency Care, General Surgery, Oncology, Neurology, Neurosurgery, Orthopedics, Ophthalmology, Cardiology, Cardiothoracic Surgery, Pulmonary Medicine, ENT and Stomatology.
Over the years the hospital has become a leader in the treatment of the following diseases:
1950s:

  1. Professor Yu performed the first successful case of pancreatoduodenectomy in China.
  2. Otolaryngology operations on head and neck neoplasms and voice rehabilitation for laryngectomy patients.
  3. Professor Shi Hua Yu has succeeded in the first case of pulmonary lobectomy under paravertebral blocking in China.

1960s:

  1. The cardiothoracic department initiated research of prosthetic valves and produced the first generation of domestic metal ball-like prosthetic valves.
  1. Cardiology department started the clinical research of rubigin in preventing arteriosclerosis and coronary heart disease.

1970s:

  1. The Orthopedic department performed the country’s first case of transpositive reimplantation of a severed lower limb.
  2. The department of Burns successfully treated a patient with 100% burns 74% of which were third-degree burns.

1980s:

  1. The Neurosurgery department performed the first case of hypophysectomy under the microscope in Zhejiang Province.
  2. The Cardiology department performed the first case of coronary angioplasty in Zhejiang Province.

1990s:

  1. The hospital was the first in the country to perform cataract mini-incision operations.
  2. Cardiac surgeons performed the first successful case of left ventricular reduction for valvulo cardiomyopathy in China.
  3. The Surgical Oncology department successfully performed hyperthemic isolated limb perfusion and limb salvage surgery in a case of malignant bone tumor.
  4. The transplant service performed the first case of piggy back orthotopic liver transplantation in Zhejiang Province.
  5. The liver paraenchymal transection with “Curettage and Aspiration Dissection” technique reached the International standard.

The 21st century:

  1. The hospital succeeded in the first case of allograft transplantation of ovary and fallopian tube in the world.
  2. The procedure of wrapping pancreatoduodenostomy reached international level.
  3. A recently-built parking apron for landing an emergency medical helicopter which facilitates the advanced air medical care system in China.

Research
The hospital not only offers high quality medical care as mentioned above, but is also dedicated to medical research. Many distinguished achievements have kept the hospital in a leading position in China and have brought us up to an advanced world standard.
Research achievements in the last 5 years:

  1. One project won the 2nd –grade National Technological Invention Award
  2. Two projects won the 2nd-grade National Sci-Tech Advancement Award
  3. Many research projects have been granted as national key projects.
  4. The research funds which are granted by the national or provincial government have reached the top level in the province.

  5. Medical PET Center is equipped with one PET scanner for patients and one micro-PET scanner for research.

Quality Control
The hospital also pays much attention to quality control and quality improvement. Several provincial level quality control centers have been established in the hospital, including:

  2. Provincial Guiding Center for Emergent Care
  3. Provincial Quality Control Center for Anesthesiology
  4. Provincial Quality Control Center for Nosocomial Infection
  5. Provincial Guiding Center for Burns Treatment
  6. Provincial Monitor Center for Drug Abuse
  7. Provincial Training Center for Clinical Nutrition
  8. Provincial Quality Control Center for Medical Chart Documentation
  9. Provincial Quality Control Center for Othopedics
  10. Provincial Quality Control Center for High Pressure Oxygen Treatment

Since reform and opening to the outside, the hospital has played an active role in international academic exchanges. In the recent 5 years, friendly relations of academic exchanges have been made with counterparts in United States, England, Germany, France, Canada, Australia, Japan and Korea. The hospital has sent a total of 606 employees abroad for special training course or academic visits, including 22 scholars sent to the university of Christian-Albrechts-Universität zu Kiel and the Universität zu Lübeck in Germany. The visitors from overseas have included more than 71 groups. The hospital also sent medical specialists to aid some Asian and African counties.
